Counselling for Depression

Depression can affect how a person feels, thinks, and experiences daily life. For many people, it involves a persistent sense of sadness, loss of motivation, or feeling disconnected from things that once brought meaning or enjoyment.

Counselling for depression provides a confidential and supportive space to explore what may be contributing to these experiences and to begin working toward meaningful change.

At Macánta Psychotherapy, depression counselling is available in-person in Dublin 12 and online across Ireland.

Signs you may be experiencing depression

Depression can affect people in different ways. Some people experience persistent sadness, while others may feel emotionally numb or disconnected from life.

Common experiences associated with depression can include:

  • feeling persistently low, empty, or hopeless

  • losing interest in activities that once felt enjoyable

  • low energy or ongoing fatigue

  • difficulty concentrating or making decisions

  • changes in sleep or appetite

  • feelings of worthlessness or self-criticism

  • withdrawing from relationships or daily life

Experiencing some of these feelings does not necessarily mean someone has depression, but when they persist over time, they can begin to have a significant impact on a person's well-being and quality of life.

Many people seek counselling for depression at different points in their lives, and speaking openly about these experiences can often be the first step toward understanding what is happening and beginning to move forward.

How therapy can help with depression

Depression counselling can help individuals explore the emotional, psychological, and life experiences that may be contributing to their current difficulties.

Therapy may help you:

• understand the patterns and factors influencing your mood
• explore underlying emotional challenges
• develop new ways of responding to difficult thoughts and feelings
• rebuild motivation and a sense of direction
• reconnect with aspects of life that feel meaningful

Therapy is not about forcing change or ignoring difficult emotions. Instead, it provides a space where these experiences can be explored safely and at a pace that feels manageable.

My approach to depression counselling

My name is Alan Byrne. I am a qualified integrative psychotherapist having completed my training and Bachelor's of Science (hons) with the Irish Institute of Counselling and Psychotherapy (IICP) in 2025.

My work with depression is informed by an integrative approach, drawing on Person Centred Therapy, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), and psychodynamic perspectives.

This approach allows therapy to be tailored to the needs and experiences of each individual.

Some people benefit from developing practical strategies to manage difficult thoughts and emotions, while others may find it helpful to explore deeper patterns or life experiences that may be contributing to how they feel.

The aim of therapy is not simply to reduce symptoms but to support individuals in developing greater understanding, resilience, and psychological flexibility.

Taking the first step

Seeking support for depression can feel like a difficult step, but many people find that speaking openly about what they are experiencing can be an important beginning.
