Counselling for Depression

Feeling low, unmotivated, or disconnected from yourself and the things you used to enjoy?

Depression can affect how you feel, think, and move through daily life, often showing up as low mood, lack of energy, or a sense of being stuck.

Counselling provides a space to explore what’s going on and begin making small, meaningful changes at a pace that feels manageable.

Signs you may be experiencing depression

Depression doesn’t always look the way people expect.

Sometimes it’s obvious. Other times, it’s quieter, like feeling disconnected from yourself, struggling to find motivation, or just getting through the day without really being present.

You might recognise some of this:

  • feeling low, empty, or stuck for long periods

  • losing interest in things you used to enjoy

  • low energy, even after resting

  • finding it hard to concentrate or make decisions

  • changes in sleep or appetite

  • being overly self-critical or feeling not good enough

  • pulling away from people or everyday life

Experiencing some of these doesn’t automatically mean depression.

But when they stick around, they can begin to affect how you feel about yourself, your relationships, and your day-to-day life.

You don’t have to wait until things feel unbearable before getting support.

Sometimes, simply talking things through is the first step toward understanding what’s going on and starting to move forward.

How therapy can help with depression

When you're feeling low, disconnected, or stuck, it can be hard to see a way forward.

Therapy gives you a space to slow things down, understand what’s been building beneath the surface, and begin to find a way through it.

Over time, therapy can help you:

• make sense of what’s been affecting your mood
• understand patterns like withdrawal, overthinking, or loss of motivation
• find new ways of responding to difficult thoughts and emotions
• begin to rebuild a sense of direction and energy
• reconnect with parts of life that feel meaningful again

This isn’t about forcing yourself to feel better or pretending everything is okay.

It’s about creating space to understand what you’re going through, and starting to move forward in a way that feels realistic and manageable.

My approach to depression counselling

My name is Alan Byrne. I am a qualified integrative psychotherapist having completed my training and Bachelor's of Science (hons) with the Irish Institute of Counselling and Psychotherapy (IICP). I am also a Pre-Accredited member of the Irish Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (IACP).

My work with depression is informed by an integrative approach, drawing on Person Centred Therapy, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), and psychodynamic perspectives.

This approach allows therapy to be tailored to the needs and experiences of each individual.

Some people benefit from developing practical strategies to manage difficult thoughts and emotions, while others may find it helpful to explore deeper patterns or life experiences that may be contributing to how they feel.

The aim of therapy is not simply to reduce symptoms but to support individuals in developing greater understanding, resilience, and psychological flexibility.

Taking the first step

Reaching out for support can feel difficult, especially when you’re already feeling low, stuck, or drained.

You don’t need to have everything figured out before you begin.

The first step is a free 15-minute call, where we can talk through what’s been going on for you and see if this feels like the right fit. There’s no pressure, just a chance to have a conversation and take that first step.

Book your free 15-minute call below when you’re ready.
