Counselling for Depression: Online & In-Person Support

Feeling low, unmotivated, or disconnected from yourself and the things you used to enjoy?

Depression can affect how you feel, think, and move through daily life, often showing up as low mood, lack of energy, or a sense of being stuck.

Counselling provides a space to explore what’s going on and begin making small, meaningful changes at a pace that feels manageable.

Understanding Depression: Common Signs & Symptoms

Depression doesn’t always look the way people expect.

Sometimes it’s obvious. Other times, it’s quieter, like feeling disconnected from yourself, struggling to find motivation, or just getting through the day without really being present.

You might recognise some of this:

  • feeling low, empty, or stuck for long periods

  • losing interest in things you used to enjoy

  • low energy, even after resting

  • finding it hard to concentrate or make decisions

  • changes in sleep or appetite

  • being overly self-critical or feeling not good enough

  • pulling away from people or everyday life

Experiencing some of these doesn’t automatically mean depression.

But when they stick around, they can begin to affect how you feel about yourself, your relationships, and your day-to-day life.

You don’t have to wait until things feel unbearable before getting support.

Sometimes, simply talking things through is the first step toward understanding what’s going on and starting to move forward.

How Counselling for Depression Can Help You

When you're feeling low, disconnected, or stuck, it can be hard to see a way forward.

Therapy gives you a space to slow things down, understand what’s been building beneath the surface, and begin to find a way through it.

Over time, therapy can help you:

• make sense of what’s been affecting your mood
• understand patterns like withdrawal, overthinking, or loss of motivation
• find new ways of responding to difficult thoughts and emotions
• begin to rebuild a sense of direction and energy
• reconnect with parts of life that feel meaningful again

This isn’t about forcing yourself to feel better or pretending everything is okay.

It’s about creating space to understand what you’re going through, and starting to move forward in a way that feels realistic and manageable.

My Practical Approach to Depression Therapy in Ireland

My name is Alan Byrne, and I am a qualified integrative psychotherapist. I completed my formal training and hold a Bachelor of Science (Hons) in Counselling and Psychotherapy from the Irish Institute of Counselling and Psychotherapy (IICP).

I am also a Pre-Accredited member of the Irish Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (IACP).

Because depression affects everyone uniquely, I use an integrative framework.

This means I do not force you into a one-size-fits-all therapeutic model. Instead, I tailor our sessions by drawing from several evidence-based perspectives:

  • Person-Centred Therapy: To ensure your therapy is built on genuine warmth, deep empathy, and an absolute lack of judgment.

  • Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT): To help you identify, catch, and gently challenge the negative thought patterns and behaviours that keep you stuck in a low mood.

  • Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT): To build psychological flexibility, helping you drop the exhausting struggle with heavy feelings and focus on meaningful actions.

  • Psychodynamic Perspectives: To safely explore how past experiences, old relationship dynamics, or hidden patterns might be contributing to how you feel today.

Therapy Fees & Session Structure

To ensure complete transparency before we begin working together, here is a clear breakdown of the practical investment and structure for counselling sessions:

  • Individual Session Fee: €60 per session.

  • Sliding Scale Options: I maintain a limited number of reduced-rate places for students, low-income individuals, or those experiencing genuine financial hardship. Please feel free to inquire about availability during your initial consultation.

  • Session Duration: 50 minutes.

  • Frequency: Sessions are typically held on a weekly basis, providing consistency to support your progress.

  • Payment & Cancellation: Payments are made the day before each session. A standard 48-hour cancellation policy applies to protect both of our schedules.

There are no hidden costs or long-term financial commitments required upfront.

We will review our work together regularly to ensure you are getting the exact support you need.
