About Macánta

The word Macánta comes from the Irish language and means honest, sincere, and genuine.

These values reflect the foundation of Macánta Psychotherapy and the type of therapeutic space I aim to create. Therapy is most effective when people feel safe to speak openly about what they are experiencing without fear of judgement.

The name also holds a personal meaning for me. It is connected to my nephew, whose name shares the same meaning. Watching him grow reminds me of something simple but important, that every person begins life with a natural authenticity and openness.

In many ways, therapy is about helping people reconnect with that sense of honesty within themselves and finding the courage to live in a way that feels true to who they are.

About Alan Byrne

My name is Alan Byrne. I am a fully qualified Mental Health Counsellor and Integrative Psychotherapist, having completed a Bachelor of Science (Honours) in Counselling and Psychotherapy with the Irish Institute of Counselling and Psychotherapy in 2025.

I am also a pre accredited member of the Irish Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy and work in accordance with their professional code of ethics.

My path into psychotherapy has been shaped not only by professional training but also by personal experience. Earlier in my life I struggled with addiction and experienced the challenges that can come with it. Recovery became a turning point that ultimately led me toward a career supporting others who may be facing similar difficulties.

Having experienced the process of change first-hand, I understand how complex it can be to confront painful experiences, break old patterns, and rebuild a life in a more meaningful direction. This experience continues to shape the empathy, authenticity, and understanding that I bring to my work as a therapist.

My Approach

My approach to psychotherapy is integrative, meaning that I draw from several therapeutic models in order to support each person in a way that suits their individual needs.

The approaches that most influence my work include Person Centred Therapy, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), and Psychodynamic Therapy.

Rather than applying a single method to everyone, I aim to work collaboratively with each client to understand their experiences and develop an approach that feels helpful and meaningful to them.

Our values

The work at Macánta Psychotherapy is guided by a set of core values that shape how therapy is approached and how the therapeutic relationship is developed.

These values reflect the type of space I aim to create for those who come to therapy.

  • Congruence
