About Macánta
The word Macánta comes from the Irish language and means honest, sincere, and genuine.
These values reflect the foundation of Macánta Psychotherapy and the type of therapeutic space I aim to create. Therapy is most effective when people feel safe to speak openly about what they are experiencing without fear of judgement.
The name also holds a personal meaning for me. It is connected to my nephew, whose name shares the same meaning. Watching him grow reminds me of something simple but important, that every person begins life with a natural authenticity and openness.
In many ways, therapy is about helping people reconnect with that sense of honesty within themselves and finding the courage to live in a way that feels true to who they are.

About Alan Byrne
My Background & Training
My name is Alan Byrne. I am a qualified Integrative Psychotherapist and Mental Health Counsellor based in Walkinstown, Dublin 12, and I offer both in-person and online therapy across Ireland.
I hold a Bachelor of Science (Honours) in Counselling and Psychotherapy from the Irish Institute of Counselling and Psychotherapy (IICP)
and am a Pre-Accredited Member of the Irish Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (IACP). I work under the supervision of a fully accredited IACP member as part of my ongoing professional development.
My Path to Psychotherapy
My path into psychotherapy was shaped not only by professional training but also by personal experience. Earlier in my life I struggled with addiction and experienced the challenges that can come with it.
Recovery became a turning point that ultimately led me toward a career supporting others who may be facing similar difficulties.
Having experienced the process of change first-hand, I understand how complex it can be to confront painful experiences, break old patterns, and rebuild a life in a more meaningful direction. This experience continues to shape the empathy, authenticity, and understanding I bring to every session.
I work with people experiencing anxiety, depression, addiction, and burnout, as well as those who simply feel stuck, overwhelmed, or caught in patterns they can't seem to break.
If any of this resonates, the first step is a free 15-minute call where we can talk through what's going on and see if working together feels like the right fit.
My Approach To Psychotherapy
My approach to psychotherapy is integrative, meaning I draw from several therapeutic models rather than applying a single method to everyone.
This allows me to tailor the work to each individual; their personality, their experiences, and what they are hoping to get from therapy.
Rather than following a fixed formula, I aim to work collaboratively with each client to develop an approach that feels genuinely helpful and meaningful to them.
The therapeutic models that most influence my work include:
Person Centred Therapy
Person Centred Therapy is built on the belief that people have an innate capacity for growth and self-understanding when given the right conditions. In practice, this means creating a therapeutic relationship built on empathy, unconditional positive regard, and authenticity; a space where you feel genuinely heard and accepted without judgement.
Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)
CBT explores the relationship between thoughts, emotions, and behaviours. It helps people identify unhelpful thinking patterns and develop more effective ways of responding to difficult situations. CBT is widely used for anxiety, depression, and a range of other difficulties, and tends to be practical and goal-oriented in nature.
Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT)
ACT focuses on developing psychological flexibility; the ability to engage with difficult thoughts and emotions without being controlled by them. Rather than trying to eliminate uncomfortable feelings, ACT helps people clarify what truly matters to them and take meaningful action in that direction, even in the presence of difficulty.
Psychodynamic Therapy
Psychodynamic therapy explores how past experiences, relationships, and unconscious patterns can shape the way we think, feel, and behave in the present. By bringing these patterns into awareness, it becomes possible to understand the deeper roots of current difficulties and begin to work through them in a more meaningful way.
My Values
My work at Macánta Psychotherapy is guided by a set of core values that shape how therapy is approached and how the therapeutic relationship is developed.
These values reflect the type of space I aim to create for those who come to therapy:

-
Congruence
-
Empathy
-
Respect
-
Compassion
-
Growth
